CB West Blackstone Knights Advance to Championship Final with Game 5 Victory
The CBW Blackstone Knights are heading to the Championship Final after defeating the Glace Bay Miners 5–3 in Game 5 of their semifinal series, clinching the series and setting up a showdown with the Cape Breton County Islanders.
The Miners opened the scoring midway through the first period when Jarrad Struthers found the back of the net at finishing a play from Kenzie Mackinnon and Branden Dauphinee to give the Miners an early 1–0 lead.
That lead would be short-lived as the Knights responded in a big way, sparked by a dominant stretch from Chad Wilson. Wilson tied the game with assists from Matthew Ellis and Stephen Fox, then struck again at 7:43 off a setup from Fox to give CBW their first lead of the night.
Wilson completed a natural hat trick just minutes later, once again finishing a play involving Fox and Ellis to cap off an explosive first period and send the Knights into the intermission with a 3–1 lead.
The Miners showed resilience in the second period and cut the deficit to one when Logan Struthers scored at 8:32, finishing a nice play from Robbie Harroun and Kenny Routledge to make it 3–2.
CBW answered however, late in the period when Neil MacLean, assisted by Drew MacDonald, restored the two-goal lead giving the Knights a 4–2 advantage heading into the third.
Early in the final period, Stephen Fox added an important insurance marker with help from Malcolm MacEachern and Eugene Fraser, extending the Knights’ lead to 5–2.
The Miners continued to push and outshot CBW heavily in the third period, however the only thing they could get past Knights goalie Kenzie MacPhail was with just 19 seconds remaining. Despite a strong push from the Miners over the final two periods, the early offensive surge from CBW, highlighted by Wilson’s first-period hat trick, proved to be the difference.
With the victory, the CBW Knights advance to the Championship Final where they will face the Cape Breton County Islanders for the league title.
