
Welsh's 35 save shutout gives Bearcats 2-0 Series lead.
Truro, NS - The East Hants Penguins traveled to the Colchester Legion Stadium on Sunday afternoon for a matinee matchup against the Truro Bearcats, looking to even the Northumberland Division Final at one game apiece. Truro entered the game following a 6–1 win in Game 1 on Friday night.
Despite the afternoon start, there was a strong crowd on hand, creating a solid atmosphere for both teams.
The opening period was more controlled compared to Game 1, with both teams emphasizing structure and limiting early chances. The deadlock was broken just over nine minutes in when Daniel Perigo fired a sharp-angle shot that got past Bryan Gillis, giving the Bearcats a 1–0 lead, it was Perigo's second goal of the playoffs. It remained a cautious period overall, with no penalties and few high-quality scoring opportunities.
Play opened up in the second period, with increased physicality and more sustained offensive pressure at both ends. Matt Welsh continued his steady play in goal for Truro, while Gillis responded well after Game 1, making a number of key saves to keep East Hants within reach. The Bearcats extended their lead when Merle Putnam who has been on fire lately scored his 8th of the playoffs when he converted on a rebound to make it 2–0.
The Penguins were awarded three power plays in the period but were unable to capitalize, as Truro’s penalty kill limited their opportunities. Late in the period, Cam Patton redirected a pass from Mitch Deruelle to give the Bearcats a 3–0 lead heading into the third.
In the final period, Truro maintained a structured approach, focusing on puck management and limiting chances against. East Hants had additional power play opportunities, including time on a major penalty, but were unable to generate a breakthrough. Penalties on both sides led to stretches of four-on-four play, reducing available time to mount a comeback.
When the final horn sounded, the Bearcats secured a 3–0 win and took a 2–0 lead in the series. Matt Welsh stopped all 35 shots he faced for the shutout, while Bryan Gillis made 28 saves in the loss.
The series now shifts back to Lantz for Game 3 on Friday night, where East Hants will look to get back into the series and Truro will aim to extend its lead.
