Truro Bearcats ready to battle with Antigonish Bulldogs in Northumberland Semi Final series #2
Truro, NS — The Truro Bearcats will take on the Antigonish Bulldogs in what promises to be a fast-paced, physical, and highly competitive Northumberland Division semifinal series.
This season, the Bearcats held a 5-1 record against the Bulldogs, even though their most recent matchups were split. Antigonish winning 4-3 on Feb. 8, and Truro taking a 3-2 shootout victory on Feb. 14. Just goes to show how close this series could be given the right situations. Truro enters the series averaging 4.6 goals per game with a +30 goal differential, while Antigonish averages 3.5 goals per game and a -14 differential. Despite the numbers, the Bulldogs have shown they can produce offensively when needed, making this a series that is expected to be tightly contested.

Goaltending will be a key storyline. The series features a marquee matchup between Truro’s Matt Welsh and Antigonish’s Justin Sumarah. Both former SMU Huskies teammates, the netminders push each other to perform at their best, with most games between these two decided by a single goal or two. Welsh comes into the series with 13 wins and a .925 save percentage, while Sumarah boasts a .902 save percentage of his own, capable of stealing games if given the opportunity.
Truro’s offense runs deep across all four lines, led by Colin Campbell (30 points), Carson Lanceleve (20 points), and Daniel Perigo (18 points). They are supported by nine additional players with double-digit points and nine players averaging at least a point per game, a testament to the team’s balance, depth, and scoring consistency. Their blue line is anchored by smooth-skating Erik Campbell and workhorse Jake Christie, two dependable defenders capable of playing in any situation, at any time. With their versatility and steady presence, both could be leaned on heavily as the intensity of this series ramps up.
Antigonish relies on star forwards Bradley Kennedy (27 points), Calum MacPherson (21 points), and Nick Mahar (16 points), joined by three other double-digit scorers. Known for their physical style and relentless grit, the Bulldogs aim to wear down opponents and win the tight, hard-fought games that could swing this series in their favor. On the back end, Michael Blundon brings a calming presence, controlling the pace of play and leading clean breakouts that create opportunities for the forwards to capitalize. Alongside him, Brian MacDougall provides steady, reliable defense, making life difficult for opposing attackers and protecting the front of the net when it matters most.
Special teams will play a pivotal role. Both clubs feature potent powerplays and disciplined penalty kills, making efficiency on the man-advantage a potential deciding factor as the series unfolds. Truro’s depth gives them multiple scoring threats in these situations, while Antigonish will rely on timely execution from their top players to capitalize.
Fans should anticipate close-checking play, timely scoring, and standout goaltending in what promises to be an exciting opening-round matchup. With skill, speed, physicality, and special teams all in play, this series is shaping up to be one that could go down to the final buzzer.
