Shootout heroics lift Bearcats past Penguins.

Last night, the Bearcats battled the East Hants Penguins in a fast-paced showdown that didn’t take long to get going. East Hants struck in the opening minute, as Taylor Burke gave the Penguins a quick lead with his 15th goal of the season silencing the crowd and setting the tone for a classic clash between two of the league’s top teams.

The Bearcats quickly settled in and responded, finding the equalizer as Kelly Bent finished off a beautiful play set up by Colin Campbell, tying the game 1–1. Bent’s goal marked his 6th of the season. Both teams would press hard for the go ahead goal, but neither could pull ahead, and the first period ended tied 1-1.

The second period followed the same script, with momentum swinging back and forth. Devin Meagher put the Penguins back in front, scoring his second of the season with a backhand over the glove of Bearcats goaltender Matt Welsh. Once again, the Bearcats answered as Merle Putnam capitalized on a perfect feed from G. Blackmore to tie it 2–2, giving Putnam a team-leading 12th goal. Late in the frame, Carson Lanceleve scored his 6th goal of the season on a crisp passing play set up by Colin Campbell, sending the Bearcats into the third period ahead 3–2.

The third period was back-and-forth, with both teams generating chances, but goaltenders Bryan Gillis for East Hants and Matt Welsh for the Bearcats held strong when it mattered most. Devin Meagher would tie the game again, scoring shorthanded with just over 10 minutes to play, marking his third goal of the season. From there, neither team could find the decisive goal in regulation, sending the game into overtime. It was the second overtime meeting of the season for these rivals.

Overtime brought out the chess match where no one wanted to make a mistake or turn over the puck. Midway through overtime the Bearcats were assessed a penalty sending Pat Stewart to the box. The Bearcats’ penalty kill stood tall, denying East Hants any quality chances to end the game. With overtime unresolved, the night moved to the dreaded shootout.

In the shootout, Regan Spears scored first for East Hants, but Colin Campbell answered for the Bearcats. From there, Matt Welsh shut the door, and Merle Putnam buried the winner to secure a 4–3 shootout victory.

Welsh was outstanding once again, stopping 45 of 48 shots for his league-leading 12th win of the season. Despite the loss, Bryan Gillis made 30 saves on 33 shots for the Penguins, continuing his solid play this season.

Final Score - Truro Bearcats 4, East Hants Penguins 3.
