Penguins Storm Back with Second Period Surge to Sink Bearcats

TRURO – In a thrilling season opener at Colchester Legion Stadium, the visiting Penguins overcame an early two-goal deficit, scoring three times in a dominant second period to defeat the Mosaik Bearcats 5-3 on Saturday night.

The game began perfectly for the home side. The Mosaik Bearcats came out strong, controlling the pace and building a 2-0 lead in the first period. #41 Merle Putnam opened the scoring at 16:09, followed by a goal from defenseman #55 Erik Campbell just a minute and thirty-nine seconds later.

However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the second period. The Penguins unleashed an offensive onslaught, outshooting the Bearcats 23-4 and completely tilting the ice in their favor. The comeback began late in the frame with #91 Andrew Shewfelt scoring back-to-back goals just 1 minute and 34 seconds apart, tying the game at 2-2. #62 Cameron Pound gave the Penguins their first lead of the night shortly after, completing a stunning three-goal outburst in under five minutes.

The Bearcats managed to stop the bleeding momentarily, with #66 Kelly Bent scoring to tie the game 3-3 before the second intermission.

Any hopes of a Bearcat comeback were extinguished in the third period. The Penguins regained control, with #36 Connor Baker netting the game-winner with just over five minutes left to play. #7 Regan Spears added an empty-net goal in the final minute to seal the 5-3 victory.

Penguins' goaltender #31 Bryan Gillis was instrumental in the win, making several key saves to keep his team in the game early and finishing with 25 stops on 28 shots. At the other end, Bearcats' goalie #73 Matthew Welsh was under constant siege, facing 50 shots and making an impressive 45 saves in a valiant losing effort.

The Penguins' offensive depth was on full display, with ten different players hitting the scoresheet. The line of Shewfelt, Spears, and #10 Jimmy Scullion was particularly effective, combining for 7 points (2 goals, 5 assists).

Final Score: Penguins 5, Mosaik Bearcats 3
