Penguins Explode for Five Second-Period Goals in 8–4 Win Over Pipers

October 9, 2026 | Northumberland Division

The East Hants Penguins opened their 2026-27 Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League campaign in impressive fashion Friday night, scoring five unanswered goals in the second period on their way to an 8–4 victory over the Pictou County Pipers at the Pictou County Wellness Centre.

Will Thompson and Tyler Noseworthy each scored twice for the Penguins, who erased an early deficit before taking control of the game in the middle frame.

It was the hometown Pipers who came out strong in the opening period.

Carter McCluskey opened the scoring just over four minutes into the game before Thompson answered for East Hants. Ben Wallace restored the Pictou County lead late in the period, sending the Pipers into the dressing room with a 2–1 advantage.

Unfortunately for the home side, the second period belonged entirely to the Penguins.

Owen MacDonald tied the game just 18 seconds into the frame with a power-play goal, setting the stage for an offensive outburst.

Thompson followed with his second of the night to give East Hants its first lead, and the Penguins weren't finished.

Ty Hunter, Noseworthy and Zac Sill all found the back of the net over the next few minutes as East Hants scored five times in the opening 8:34 of the second period, turning a 2–1 deficit into a commanding 6–2 lead.

Pictou County attempted to claw its way back in the third, with Paul Hughes scoring early in the period. However, Andrew Wigg answered just 25 seconds later to restore the four-goal advantage.

Noseworthy added his second of the evening before Logan Crosby rounded out the scoring for the Pipers.

Along with their two-goal performances from Thompson and Noseworthy, the Penguins received offensive contributions throughout the lineup, with eight different players recording multiple points or scoring a goal.

Crosby led the way for Pictou County with a goal and two assists, while McCluskey and Wallace each finished with a goal and an assist.

East Hants outshot Pictou County 43–34, including a 16–7 advantage in the third period.

The Penguins will look to carry that momentum into their next contest, while the Pipers will look to bounce back after a difficult opening night on home ice.

Final Score: Penguins 8, Pipers 4
