MacPhail’s 38-Save Performance Ends Islanders’ Perfect Run
The Cape Breton West Blackstone Knights handed the Cape Breton County Islanders their first loss of the season Friday night in Inverness. Earning a gritty 3–2 victory at home, powered by a sensational 38-save performance from Kenzie MacPhail between the pipes.
The Knights set the tone early, striking shorthanded in the first period when Cody Hinkley jumped on a flip pass over the defence from Eugene Fraser and buried a breakaway to open the scoring. It marked Hinkley’s second goal of the season and gave Cape Breton West the ideal start on home ice.
That momentum carried into the second period, where Stephen Fox continued the surge, scoring his fifth of the season with a short-side snipe from the left faceoff dot to make it 2–0, a dream start for the Knights.
The Islanders responded on a 2-on-1 finished by Mitchell Warner, his fourth of the season, but Cape Breton West answered right back to halt any momentum. Captain Neil MacLean fired a puck on net from the point, and Thomas “Tuma” Simon provided the perfect tip in front to restore the two-goal cushion. The goal was Simon’s third of the season.
Pushing hard in the third period, the Islanders cut the deficit to one with a high-slot marker and pressed relentlessly down the stretch. That’s when MacPhail took over, calmly turning aside chance after chance to protect the lead.
Facing heavy pressure in a fast-paced, physical battle, MacPhail was outstanding, but it was the commitment, structure, and buy-in from the group in front of him that sealed the result. When the final buzzer sounded, the Cape Breton West Blackstone Knights skated off home ice with a 3–2 victory.
It was a full team effort and a statement win for the Blackstone Knights, ending the Islanders’ perfect run and sending a clear message that this group can go toe-to-toe with the league’s top-seeded team.
