Bulldogs Dominate Pipers on Home Ice, Led by Mahar's Hat-Trick

ANTIGONISH – In a commanding display of home-ice advantage, the Antigonish Bulldogs skated to a decisive 5-1 victory over the visiting Shoreline Pipers on Saturday night at the Antigonish Arena.

The Bulldogs set the tone early, exploding for three goals in a blistering 2-minute and 7-second span in the first period to put the game firmly in their control.

The home team’s offense was powered by a stellar performance from #15 Nick Mahar, who netted a hat-trick. Mahar opened the scoring at 19:35 of the first period and completed his trio of goals with the team's fourth, an insurance marker in the third period. He was a constant threat, with #13 Zach Fitzgerald assisting on all three of his goals.

The scoring started with Mahar's first, assisted by Fitzgerald and #5 Brian Macdougall. Just over a minute later, defenseman #3 Marc Fougere found the back of the net, with helpers from #10 Jake Kyle and #12 Alex Bonaparte. Mahar struck again 61 seconds after that, with Fitzgerald and #7 Brad Kennedy earning the assists.

After a second-period fight seemed to energize the Pipers, they managed to get on the board with a goal from #18 Brandon Verge, assisted by #10 Nate Leger. However, that was the only puck to get past Bulldogs' netminder #1 Justin Sumarah, who was a wall in net, turning aside 24 of 25 shots for a .960  save percentage.

The Bulldogs snuffed out any hope of a Pipers comeback in the third period. Mahar completed his hat-trick at 15:50, and Alex Bonaparte added a final goal at 10:42 to seal the 5-1 victory.

The game was a physical affair, with both teams combining for 18 minutes in penalties. The Pipers' discipline wavered in the second period, taking four consecutive minors which hampered their ability to mount a sustained comeback.

With the win, the Bulldogs start their 25/26 NSSHL regular season on a high note, showcasing a potent offense and reliable goaltending. They will look to carry this momentum into their next contest, while the Shoreline Pipers will aim to regroup and refine their game after a tough opening-night loss.

Final Score: Bulldogs 5, Shoreline Pipers 1
