Al Hollingsworth is one of Nova Scotia’s most influential figures in the development and promotion of hockey across multiple generations. A lifelong supporter of amateur sport, Hollingsworth’s impact on hockey in the province spans coaching, officiating, team leadership, league founding, and media advocacy making him a true builder of the game.  

Born and raised in Halifax, Al Hollingsworth began his involvement in sport in the mid-20th century, embarking on a remarkable five-decade career that touched almost every facet of organized hockey. He coached youth and adult teams in multiple divisions, dedicating his time and expertise to developing players and strengthening community programs at a grassroots level.  

Hollingsworth’s leadership extended into hockey administration. He was the founding president of the Halifax Blues Senior Hockey Club and served as president of the Nova Scotia Senior Hockey League, roles in which he helped shape competitive hockey structures and provided sustained support for senior level competition in the province. In the junior ranks, he was president of the Maritime Junior A Hockey League, where his guidance contributed to league stability and opportunity for young athletes.  

Among his lasting contributions was his role in establishing and growing junior hockey infrastructure. In 1980, Hollingsworth formed the Mainland Junior B Hockey League, which later evolved into the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League a key development path for players in the province.  

Beyond coaching and administration, Al Hollingsworth also served as a referee and sports official, bringing fairness and passion to the game at every level. His voice in sport extended into media, where he worked as a sports editor and radio personality, championing local sport coverage and elevating the profile of amateur hockey throughout Nova Scotia.  

For these significant and lasting contributions, Al Hollingsworth was inducted as a Builder into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame, recognizing his exceptional service to hockey and sport in the province.
